Background of the Study
Online comedy content has become a pervasive element of digital culture, particularly among youth audiences. In Akure North Local Government, Ondo State, humor disseminated via social media platforms has been linked to enhanced creative thinking and innovative expression among the young. The interrelation between humor and creativity is well-documented, suggesting that exposure to diverse comedic narratives can stimulate cognitive flexibility (Ibrahim, 2023; Olabisi, 2024). Digital comedy, which often employs satire and irony, provides a unique framework that challenges conventional thought patterns and encourages originality. The online environment thus serves as a dynamic platform for artistic and creative experimentation. Youth engagement with comedy content is seen as a catalyst for broader creative expression and problem-solving skills, reflecting the transformative impact of digital media on cultural production. Nevertheless, debates persist regarding the depth of creative influence and whether the rapid consumption of online humor might also trivialize serious discourse (Adekunle, 2025). This study aims to explore these dynamics and provide insights into how digital comedy content fosters creativity in a local context.
Statement of the Problem
Despite growing evidence linking online humor to creativity, there is limited empirical research focusing on its impact on youth creativity in Akure North. Challenges include determining the direct influence of digital comedy on creative outputs and distinguishing between entertainment and genuine creative stimulation. Additionally, there is concern that excessive exposure to superficial humor may detract from the development of more rigorous creative skills. The lack of localized studies further complicates the assessment of online comedy’s role in the creative processes of young people in Ondo State (Bello, 2024).
